During this time, slaves could fight to earn their freedom. Although James was the integral part in winning the war, he was not granted his freedom for 2 years because they had given him the important and risky role as a spy for them instead of being a "soldier".  The General, Lafayette, wrote a letter about his valiant efforts as a spy, to help James get his freedom, but it still took 3 more years for him to gain his freedom in 1787....
